A resounding question now emanates from communities around the country: How do we fix historic inequities that continue to plague people of color… particularly in Corporate America? It is clear that our citizens are no longer comfortable with the traditional approaches to addressing systemic challenges – i.e. ones that contain the “right language and practices” but are mostly symbolic and ultimately, yield slow, and often, insignificant change.

And so, this podcast, The Equalizer Project was born. So, who am I and who am I to start a podcast? I am Brenda Ross-Dulan, Managing Principal of The Ross Dulan Group, a boutique strategy consulting firm. I am not a historian, nor political figure, or diversity expert. I am an African American woman who has over 25 years of lived experience in Corporate America. If it has happened in the corporate world, believe me… I’ve seen it, felt it, celebrated it and survived it. A Howard University graduate with an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, I have navigated the everchanging waters of financial services, led during five corporate mergers, and have been one of only a handful of black executives in a firm with over 200,000 employees. While I enjoyed and thrived in a highly competitive environment, I often carried the fear that my failure would close the door to others that looked like me. But I was always grateful for the platform to do good – to invest in underserved communities and to champion talented people who often felt invisible. Because… like other executives of color who were celebrated as the only one of our kind in the room… we often struggled to have our voices heard. I know the stories. I am the stories.

Through conversations with leaders who can share rich, complex, and powerful experiences of life in the corporate world, I hope to bring awareness, to heal, to inspire and to leave the audience with hope and a solution, yes, a solution. It is part of my calling or personal mission – to change lives and to leave others better off. This is the work of The Equalizer Project.

Brenda Ross-Dulan addressed some key issues impacting women and minorities in the workplace and behind closed doors. She discussed what calibrations are like and how unconscious bias influences career trajectories. Brenda Ross-Dulan will forever be one of my favorite episodes.
